As the 80's ended in Hip Hop, Hip Hop didn't end in the 80s. In fact, it continued to grow and spread its influence all over the planet. By the time the early 90s approached, Ice Cube and Will Smith's careers hit full stride when they charted heavy both in film, television and the music charts. New artists burst on the scene leaving behind their legacy like 2Pac and Snoop Dogg. Producers like Teddy Riley and DJ Premiere's talents caught fire in the music world. And this was all just a tip of the iceberg of the impending storm of Hip Hop artists to come! Once again, we chronicled for you some of those defining artists in this era including NWA, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Digital Underground and of course, the late Heavy D. DOWNLOAD/LISTEN/REMEMBER! JUGGERNAUT RADIO - THE HIP HOP ANTHOLOGY: PT IV - THE LATE 80s
February 07, 2012 01:16 PM PST
There is little argument that in the late 80s Hip Hop experienced a serious creative spurt of originality in both the music and the lyrical flow. The attention shifted from the DJ taking center stage (though DJs still played a very crucial role in developing an artist's signature sound) to the MC moving toward the forefront. Now, record companies were starting to take Hip Hop seriously and artists found themselves on signing lucrative deals (Mantronix is the first Hip Hop act in history to receive a seven figure music contract). Juggernaut Radio presents Hip Hop in the late 80s with artists like Public Enemy, Slick Rick, Too $hort, De La Soul, NWA, MC Lyte and a whole lot more artists who contributed to shaping Hip Hop's most defining moment in its young history. September 20, 2011 07:37 PM PDT
The Wu-Tang Clan was assembled in 1992 with RZA as the de facto leader and the group's producer.[2] RZA and Ol' Dirty Bastard adopted the name for the group after the film Shaolin and Wu Tang.[7] The group's debut album loosely adopted a Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang theme, dividing the album into Shaolin and Wu-Tang sections. The Wu-Tang Clan first became known in 1993 following the release of the independent single "Protect Ya Neck", which immediately gave the group a sizable underground following, especially after their tour with Kat Nu and Cypress Hill. Though there was some difficulty in finding a record label that would sign the Wu-Tang Clan while still allowing each member to record solo albums with other labels, Loud/RCA finally agreed, releasing their debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), in 1993. This album turned out to be critically acclaimed, and to date is regarded as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time.[9][10][11] The success of Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers established the group as a creative and influential force in mid 1990s hip hop, allowing Ol' Dirty Bastard, GZA, RZA, Raekwon, Method Man, and Ghostface Killah to negotiate solo contracts. RZA spoke on the Wu-Tang Clan's unorthodox business model: We reinvented the way hip hop was structured, and what I mean is, you have a group signed to a label, yet the infrastructure of our deal was like anyone else's [...] We still could negotiate with any label we wanted, like Meth went with Def Jam, Rae stayed with Loud, Ghost went with Sony, GZA went with Geffen Records, feel me? [...] And all these labels still put "Razor Sharp Records" on the credits [...] Wu Tang was a financial movement. So what do you wanna diversify...? [...] Your assets?[12]
